Yukon Voices Rising
Playwriting/Writing for Performance Circle
2013-2018
This group was for Indigenous and Northern artists who are passionate about writing for performance. The emphasis was on development of first drafts and/or revised scripts, as well as workshops and readings of new works in development, in a supportive, highly focused, stimulating environment. This professional development opportunity was open to motivated creators of all disciplines including playwrights, storytellers, writers, dancers, and artists from other genres. Yukon Voices was based in Whitehorse but welcomed participants from other communities.
The theme of our inaugural Yukon Voices program for the 2013/14 Season was Our Rivers Our Stories, as Gwaandak Theatre began development of our new cycle of play development inspired by our Yukon past and present. Our vision for this cycle included stories which may be shared anywhere, from a street corner to a riverfront to a theatre mainstage. The theme of the 2015/16 Season was Exploring Justice.
