Are you interested in guiding the future of Gwaandak Theatre’s artistic programming? We are seeking a new Artistic Director to lead us into the 2027/28 season & beyond! We are hoping to have the incoming Artistic Director work alongside the current AD for the 2026/27 Season and be part of the Season’s Awaken Festival & Indigenous Summer Play Readings.

Application Deadline: September 1st, 2026
Start Date: January 10th, 2027
Contract Term: January 10th 2027-June 30th 2027 (24 weeks) with option to renew on a permanent or multi-year contract starting July 1st, 2027.
Place of Work: Whitehorse, Yukon Territory
Rate/Hours: $31.22 per hour (current Yukon living wage) / 30 hours per week

2 Weeks Vacation (up to 4 weeks per year upon contract renewal)
2% Cost of Living Adjustment (COLA) per year upon contract renewal
Reporting to the Board of Directors, the Artistic Director is responsible for all artistic matters of Gwaandak Theatre Society, supervision of staff, and development of funds for operations and programming. The AD is additionally responsible for the planning and implementing of the mission, mandate, and vision of the Society as approved by the board. The AD is the head and driving force of Gwaandak Theatre Society as well as the face of the theatre to the community and stakeholders.
This position has dynamic and shifting responsibilities, requiring an individual who can respond to problems independently when required. Organisation, preparedness, and the ability to stay calm and flexible during stressful situations are an asset to this position.
This Position directly supervises: the General Manager, Production Manager, and relevant interns, contractors, and student positions. The AD is expected to develop relationships and be present to staff and contractors that do not report directly to them. If staff are added, as per the organizational chart, the reporting chain will be updated accordingly in the following Admin phase.

Gwaandak Theatre is always looking for script submissions from Indigenous playwrights to be considered for our Indigenous Summer Play Readings and Awaken Festival showcases. If you have a new script that may not be on our radar, or if you have a colleague with a great script, please get in touch!
