Practical Playwrighting - A Talk With Daniel MacIvor - February 13th - The Old Fire Hall: Always wanted to be a playwright? Have an idea for a script and want some feedback? How about getting advice from Canada’s best known playwright, actor, film director and screenwriter Daniel MacIvor? Sign up to hear Daniel MacIvor’s take on Practical Playwriting! Afterwards, you will have an opportunity to pitch your play idea and get a five or ten minute public dramaturgy session from the man himself!

Daniel MacIvor is a Canadian playwright, actor, film director, screenwriter from Sydney, Nova Scotia. Five-time nominee (and one time winner) of the Governor General’s Award and two-time winner of the Chalmers Award for best new Canadian play, he is one of Canada's most innovative playwrights. He has written over twenty plays, many of them one-man shows which he has performed and toured across the country. His film and TV work are most notably Twitch City (tv series), Trigger (movie, 2010) and Republic of Doyle (tv series) among many others. A selection of films that he wrote, directed and/or starred in include his first feature film Past Perfect (2002), Marion Bridge (2002) a screenplay adaptation of his play by the same name, Wilby Wonderful (2004), Whole New Thing (2005) and Trigger (2010).

THE SPACE WANTS YOU - February 28th & March 1st - Yukon Arts Centre Studio: Gwaandak Theatre and the Yukon Arts Centre present a dance improvisation and performance skills workshop with Yukon artist Aimée Dawn Robinson. Expand your performance tool kit! In this two-part workshop, participants explore key improvisational and performance material and concepts. Through the lens (and practice) of improvised dance, performers of all kinds can strengthen their awareness of space, time, the body, and the beautiful transparency of the dancer's heart. Workshop leader Aimée Dawn Robinson brings decades of international dance/theatre performance and training to this work.

Creative Vocal - April 5th & April 12th - Yukon Arts Centre Studio: Gwaandak Theatre and the Yukon Arts Centre present a vocal improvisation workshop with Yukon artist K. Scott Maynard. In this two-part workshop, we will harness the power of our voices and explore systems and strategies for group improvisation.

Canada, It’s Complicated – A Comedy and Improv Workshop - November 8th - The Guild Hall: Theatre games, laugh-out-loud characters, & improv on “being Canadian, eh”… Gwaandak Theatre presents Canada, It’s Complicated – A Comedy and Improv Workshop. This 2-hour workshop features theatre games, plus improvs around creating comical characters and what it’s like to be Canadian. It’s led by Jamie Pitt and facilitated by the seven performers in this high-energy touring show.

Performance Techniques - November 21st-23rd - Yukon Arts Centre Studio: This acting workshop led by Margo Kane explores the fullness of creative expression required as performer. Participants will hone their performance techniques which will improve their ability to work in their chosen performance field whether they be an actor, singer, dancer etc. For those who want to explore their own artistic selves, it is an exciting and joyful way to allow our artist to “come out and play”. We will explore various theatre games and activities to unlock, unblock and flow with that creative river.

Margo Kane has been a performing artists working across disciplines from the early 70’s. Well-known for her acting roles as well as her directing and choreographic experience, she is a consummate performer who is always honing her own skills to continue working at the top of her game. Participants at any level of experience are welcome as the activities are geared to offer experiences and methods to improve the performers’ awareness of themselves and their craft.
