Hidden Memories Play Reading with Lillian Nakamura Maguire & Patti Flather

Directed by Donna Yamamoto

The daughter of Japanese immigrants sifts through her parents’ memorabilia, piecing together their early BC life and forced relocation. She tries to find peace with her parents’ choices during times of racial discrimination, her own identity, and what she passes on to her daughter.

A reading of the latest of Hidden Memories was done by Lillian Nakamura Maguire and Patti Flather. This reading was part of Advance Theatre: New Works by Diverse Women Readings, Vancouver Fringe Festival, and in partnership with Ruby Slippers Theatre and Playwrights Guild of Canada. Hidden Memories was in development with Gwaandak Theatre, including as part of the 2016 Exploring Justice Play Readings Series. We acknowledge the support of the National Association of Japanese Canadians Endowment Fund.

September 17th, 2017 - False Creek Gym, Vancouver BC

ABOUT THE PLAYWRIGHT

Lillian Nakamura Maguire is a second-generation Japanese Canadian new playwright living in Whitehorse. Throughout her career as an adult educator, facilitator and community activist she has used stories in her work in human rights education, elder abuse prevention and intercultural relations. She has written and produced short digital stories on these themes. She also enjoys writing short stories, memoir and haiku. Playwriting is a new challenge…but one in which she hopes to further develop as an artist and storyteller.
