  • Meadowlarks + Hunting in the Dehcho

Co-Presented by Yukon Film Society & Gwaandak Theatre

    Thursday, April 16th - 7PM Start (Doors @ ~6:30PM) - Cinema 1, Yukon Theatre, Whitehorse YT

    Meadowlarks

    Alberta | 2025 | Canadian, Drama | 91 min | Dir. Tasha Hubbard | Parental Guidance Advised

An emotional journey handled with care, respect, and beauty.

Inspired by her own acclaimed documentary Birth of a Family, Tasha Hubbard's Meadowlarks tells the story of four Cree siblings, separated since childhood and now in their fifties, who agreed to meet for the first time over a holiday weekend in Banff. Without the usual markers of familiarity, or a shared sense of cultural belonging, Anthony (Michael Greyeyes), Connie (Carmen Moore), Marianne (Alex Rice) and Gwen (Michelle Thrush) discover unexpected moments of joyous synchronicity, conflict, and connection. With further guidance from the warmth of a newly discovered community, a fledgling family is invited to heal. Excited and curious, but also scarred and afraid of rejection, the Meadowlark siblings must contend with where they have been, and who they will become, especially to one another.

Content Advisory: mature themes, Sixties Scoop and substance abuse.

  • Nechako: It Will Be a Big River Again + Dene Brother

Co-Presented by Yukon Film Society & Gwaandak Theatre

    Wednesday, April 22nd - 5PM Start (Doors @ ~4:30PM) - Cinema 1, Yukon Theatre, Whitehorse YT

Nechako: It Will Be a Big River Again

    Canada | 2025 | Canadian, Documentary | 91 min | Dir. Lyana Patrick

Nechako is a crucial documentary from Lyana Patrick that follows two Indigenous Nations fighting for our collective future.

When the Kenney Dam was built in the 1950s, it diverted 70 percent of the Nechako River into an artificial reservoir, severely impacting the lives of local Stellat'en and Saik'uz Nations. What followed were decades of resistance, including legal actions against the Canadian federal and provincial governments and Rio Tinto Alcan, a subsidiary of a global mining conglomerate. Nechako follows the people fighting today to restore a river and a way of life: Nations going up against industry, community leaders advocating for their people, Elders documenting their histories and community members living off the land. An urgent call to action, Patrick's film asks what survival looks like when it serves everyone, in a story 70 years in the making-a story of hope and resistance against all odds, amidst large-scale environmental destruction and despite the will of powerful institutions.
