New Yukon Voices 14/15

This is a mentored program open to both emerging and established playwrights, including storytellers, writers, dancers, artists from other genres and anyone who is passionate about theatre storytelling. This program runs from late September to November. Participants (up to 10) will develop and hone their skills in playwriting through discussion, storytelling and writing exercises and constructive critiques. Each participant will begin or develop a short play. Sessions will explore questions of character, plot, dialogue and structure. New Yukon Voices is led by Patti Flather with guests.

Participating playwrights will:

• Meet 6 times weekly from late September to early November (tentatively on Tuesdays from 6 to 9 pm)
• Attend a weekend “Writing Home” playwriting workshop Oct. 3-5 with guest theatre artists Tara Beagan and Andy Moro of Article 11 Performance Group
• Write a draft of a short play
• Motivate and inspire each other in a focused and supportive workshop community, with a shared curiosity and passion for theatre storytelling
• Receive guidance and direction from professional playwrights and theatre artists, including writing exercises and discussions
• Improve productive writing habits – with regular deadlines for new content (does not have to be long! Just fresh!)
• Hone critical analysis skills in careful reading of, listening to and critiquing other people’s writing
• Be eligible for New Yukon Voices Phase 2 after Jan. 1, 2015 – With professional dramaturgy, and rehearsal/public reading of selected scenes with actors
• Be considered for future opportunities including dramaturgy, play workshops and professional production
• Be able to expand their play into a longer piece if they desire
