Indigenous Summer Play Readings 2023

June & July 2023

Catch two new plays this summer out in the Yukon sun! ISPR 2023 will provide an accessible touring opportunity for Yukon audiences to experience two Indigenous scripts being read by local performers.

Frozen River/Nikwatin Sipiy

By Michaela Washburn, Carrie Costello, and Joelle Peters

Directed by Jeszika Mae

Grandmother Moon tells the story of two eleven-year-olds, born under the same blood moon, but in different parts of the world. This new play follows their stories as they meet in a forest, and that of their descendants who meet in the present day in what is known as Manitoba. A broken promise from the past can be righted when there is finally an openness to learn from those who have protected and honoured the waterways for centuries.

Gabe and Jocelyn are a new couple in love. Anything seems possible and the future seems bright. But what happens when the scars of the past are too deep and too dominant in the present? Exploring contemporary love between an Indigenous and a Settler couple, can one keep their roots and playfulness alive as life gets harder? Can our animal guides protect us and keep us safe? Or are we all destined to get consumed by our own scars? This play explores linear realism drama alongside circle-based Anishinaabe animal cosmologies and spiritual guides.
