Gwaandak Theatre hosted a Personal Legacy creation workshop in May-June 2010 led by Diane Roberts and Rosemary Georgeson from urban ink productions, with Yukon theatre artist Jude Wong training as a co-facilitator. Six Yukon artists were involved. This powerful workshop began with personal and archival research about an ancestor, along with in-studio ensemble and individual physical and vocal exercises designed to awaken ancestral histories stored within us.
We uncovered themes of exile and migration from France, Scotland, China to the Maritimes, the vast Prairies, San Francisco, the north Yukon. We shared some of our discoveries with the public on June 9th at The Old Fire Hall, in Arrivals: Whispers from Our Ancestors, a sneak preview of creations in progress.
Gwaandak Theatre also hosted a Personal Legacy workshop in July 2009 at Hellaby Hall in Whitehorse, with 7 participants, led by urban ink’s Diane Roberts, Rosemary Georgeson and Danielle Smith. Four Yukon Arrivals participants (Amber Walker, Jude Wong, Will Jones and Leonard Linklater) were part of The Co(Lab): An Indigenous Crossroads Laboratory in Vancouver in November 2009. Urban ink productions spearheaded this ambitious gathering of almost 20 Aboriginal and diverse artists from across Canada. During the intensive week, participants planted the seeds for an exciting new cross-disciplinary performance work. They held a public showcase at the W2 Building in the city’s downtown core.
